Baby on a Budget: How to Afford Everything They Need

Recently found out you’re expecting? Congratulations! Pregnancy is an incredibly exciting time, the creation of new life is nothing short of a miracle when you think about it. But as well as being full of joy, there are lots of stresses and things to resolve too, and finances are one of them. Babies need a lot of items and if you sit and add it all up, you might be wondering how you can afford it. But don’t panic, here are some ways to go about it.

Spread the cost
As soon as you find out you’re pregnant, come up with a financial plan for the remaining months before your baby arrives. Write a list of everything you’ll need, and get a bit at a time. That way you have a number of months to spread the cost rather than waiting until the last minute and being stuck with a huge cost on your hands.
Utilise gifts
When you find out you’re expecting, it’s natural for friends and family to want to help you out and you’re likely to receive lots of gifts. This is why a list is useful, you can tick things off as you buy them and show what you have left to get to anyone wanting to buy something for your new addition. This stops you ending up with repeats of things you already have. If you’re throwing a baby shower, it could be useful to create an Amazon wishlist with items at all different price points which you could send to anyone that’s interested in buying things for you. Close family members such as the baby’s grandparents might even offer to purchase larger things for you like nursery furniture, the pram or car seat. Which of course can help you and your partner massively.

Claim the money you’re entitled to
When you have a baby it’s going to mean having at least some time off work, but see what you’re entitled to during this time. If you work for a company, you’ll often be entitled to maternity pay depending on the hours you work and how long you’ve been there. If you’re self-employed, you can apply for maternity allowance from the government. Make sure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to as it can make life so much easier while you’re not working, and means you don’t have to completely deplete your savings.

See what you can get for free
There’s plenty of free baby stuff about for new parents if you keep an eye out. Companies offer starter packs of essentials you might need, plus if you have friends and family who have had babies then they will most likely have some things to pass down to you. This saves you from making purchases for things that you might only need for a few weeks. Take clothes for example, babies grow so quickly that you’ll need a constant supply. Any good quality items that loved ones can pass on for you to use during that time can really save you money.
